The Sun Shines on Kipling Day!

Families and friends, numbering close to 120, came from as far as Germany for the annual end of year Kipling Day, which took place in hot June weather on Lower Pavilion and Lower Wood. The Fathers took on the Sons in the traditional cricket match (and won!), while there were big games of football and plenty of hanging out and boundary talk too. BBQ's were lit and we were able to welcome some of the boys who will begin their life in Kipling in September. After the fun finished, many trooped back to Kipling to watch a certain World Cup game against a certain European opposition. Kipling Day was more fun than that...

Kipling golfers, James McConachie and Sam Fitzell, won the House Golf competition this month, in a convincing display against some of the school's best players. Playing in a handicap tournament at Hanbury Manor, James and Sam outscored their more-fancied opponents. The victory was all the more pleasing as Sam and James are only in the Middles, whilst several other players were Sixth Formers.

The Easter Term ended with a buzz of activity for Kipling. Many boys were involved in the spectacular Spring Concert, with its African theme, colourful atmosphere and rhythmic pulse, while there was more sporting success on the games field.

While the Junior and Senior Hockey teams were unlucky to lose in their respective House match semi-finals, the Junior Footballers went one better and were victorious in the Junior Competition, beating Thomason 1-0 in a closely contested final on Terrace. Having already won the Cross Country competition, the Kipling Juniors are set to compete strongly in House matches for some years to come.

Kipling hosted its biggest-ever Kipling Event in March, with 160 guests crammed into the Attlee Room for an evening of entertainment, eating and fund-raising in the company of boys and their families. This annual event, unique to Kipling among Haileybury houses, attracted guests from far and wide who enjoyed home-cooked food and home-produced entertainment. HPA rep Chris Lane master-minded her final Kipling Even and croonerJonny Smith made his musical swan-song. £1500 was also raised for the three School charities in this, the House's social highlight of the year.

Record attendance for Le Bas Kipling Dinner

A record 140 people attended the 70th Anniversary Le Bas Kipling Dinner, held recently at the Royal Over-Seas League in London. Although numbers for the annual reunion dinner have been increasing in recent years, this was probably the largest ever social gathering of former members of the House. The dinner, begun before the second world war by former housemaster JBD Joce, welcomed new Master Joe Davies, as Guest of Honour, while other guests travelled from Switzerland, Germany and the USA for the event, the only one of its kind at Haileybury.
